Scarlet Tanager

Species Details

Distinguished from the Summer Tanager by its black wings and tail, and song of short, burry phrases interspersed with sharp “chip-burr” notes. The female is greenish-yellow with dark wings. It mainly requires large blocks of oak-hickory forests for breeding and for capturing insects in the canopy. The nest is built of twigs, grass, and rootlets far out on a tree limb.
