Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Species Details

The only eastern North American hummingbird is emerald green above and whitish beneath, the male flashing a ruby-red throat. This tiny dynamo beats its wings about 53 times per second as it seeks insects or hovers while nectaring, making squeaky twittering sounds. The nest is a golf ball-sized cup made of spider silk and dotted with lichens. Wintering in Central America, it often crosses the Gulf of Mexico in a single flight.
