Red-Bellied Woodpecker

Species Details

This handsome bird has rounded head with red extending from the beak to the nape, with females having red from the crown to the nape. It makes loud “churrr” and “chuck” calls and excavates a round nest hole in standing dead trees. Like most woodpeckers, it feeds mainly on insects, but will visit backyard bird feeders. Not to be confused with the Red-headed Woodpecker.
