Species Details

This easily identified dabbler has a large distinctive bill that has comblike “teeth” which strain the water for microscopic plants and animals. Both sexes have colors similar to the Mallard. Usually seen in small groups, quickly skimming the surface while paddling along. Summers in the western US and Canada.
