Species Details

This dabbling duck is regularly seen in winter on the lake. The males are a subtly beautiful mix of grays and browns, including a distinctive black tail. Both males and females have a distinctive white patch on the innermost flight feathers, often best seen in flight. In summer, these puddle ducks breed widely in prairie potholes throughout the northern U.S. and Canada.
