Downy Woodpecker

Species Details

Tennessee’s smallest woodpecker is starkly black and white; males have a red spot on the back of the head. Commonly seen at bird feeders, it is comfortable in a variety of habitats where trees suitable for making a small nesting cavity are available. It makes a whinnying call, sounding much like a tiny horse.
