American Coot
Species Details
This very common rail, a relative of the domestic chicken, is distinguished by its all-black body and thick white beak. Does not have webbed feet like a duck but instead has lobes on each toe, pushing forward as it swims. It both dabbles and dives for plants, insects, and fish. Voice is a high-pitched squeaking cackle. Is found year-round from the Mississippi Valley west, occasionally visiting other times of the year.
