Radnor Lake reopens early thanks to 300 volunteers after ice storm

The Tennessean – March 3, 2026

The excitement was palpable as around 40 volunteers gathered at Radnor Lake State Park the morning of March 2. They were the last of several waves of volunteers to arrive after a devastating ice storm forced a rare closure at the popular park on Jan. 25. The group fanned out across nearly 1,400 acres to clear rocks, tree roots and debris from the trails.

By midday, the popular state park reopened — two months earlier than expected. Park Manager Steve Ward said the feat was made possible by the support that flowed in from the state and the community, including around 300 volunteers and resources from Friends of Radnor Lake.

Reopening the park sooner than later was an intentional effort to give visitors a chance to see it burst into life.”The best thing in the world is spring at Radnor Lake,” Ward said with a smile. “There’s still work to be done. There’s months of works ahead … but we’re going to enjoy spring.”
