Pileated Woodpecker

Species Details

Our largest woodpecker is the size of a crow, with a striking red crest. It gouges long rectangular furrows in dead trees searching for insects and excavates a distinctive rectangular nest cavity. Its loud, resonant “kik-kik-kik-kik” call can be heard for great distances in the forest. They can be somewhat approachable if they are feeding on a dead log on the ground.
